1:1 therapy

Making sense and moving forwards

Why opt for 1:1 counselling - or psychotherapy?

There is constant debate in the UK about the difference between counselling and psychotherapy. As with all aspects of mental wellbeing, the problem seems to be with the language used, and the connotations people attach to the words. I am an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, and purposely chose to pursue this route of study and practice because I believe the two are best integrated to meet the needs of my clients. In the interest of simplicity, I will use the word 'counselling' here.

Counselling is a about sharing what is troubling you, in a safe and confidential environment, with a professional who is qualified and experienced to listen and respond in a way that helps you to understand yourself and others better. The counselling process does not involve having anything 'done' to you - you are in control of your own agenda.

Unlike coaching, counselling provides the opportunity to explore the roots and beginnings of your current problem before going on to managing the problem more effectively and leading a more satisfying life. Understanding the source of what is troubling you, and engaging with this in the safety of a therapeutic relationship, is often the first step towards moving forwards.

People choose counselling for a myriad of reasons; perhaps you are experiencing challenging life events such as divorce or redundancy, or you are looking for ways to change your unwanted, but ingrained thoughts, feelings and behaviour patterns. As well as life-changing events, I typically work with clients struggling with:

  • Anxiety
  • Abuse
  • Addiction
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Identity
  • Relationships
  • Self esteem
  • Self harm
  • Stress
  • Work-related matters
